Some Indian regions may need ethanol imports to achieve 20% blending

June 1, 2022 |

In India, Platts reports that ethanol imports may be needed in some regions of the country to achieve the ambitious 20% blending mandate by 2025/26 as non-key sugarcane regions struggle to get production capacity up in time. India has been pushing to not only divert sugar production to ethanol via heavy-B and heavy-C molasses but also grain-based ethanol with a focus on broken rice and corn. Some believe there should be a mix in alternative fuel options including electric vehicles rather than diverting land to sugarcane for ethanol.
