Red Remembrance Day poppies will soon go green

November 1, 2022 |

In the United Kingdom, the red paper poppies that adorn war memorials, graves, and lapels to memorialize the commonwealth’s casualties of war and symbolize hope for a peaceful future on Remembrance Day will soon be completely biodegradable.

The new poppies will swap plastic “stems” for fiberboard on 130,000 wreaths, beginning in 2023, according to the Daily Mail. More than 30 million poppies are produced annually by disabled ex-servicemen for the November 11 holiday.

“We have been working with suppliers and the relevant experts to produce a new poppy that has minimal impact on the environment,” a Royal British Legion spokesperson told the publication. “The RBL is committed to reducing the amount of single-use plastic.”
