Toymaker Mattel secures biobased ABS

In South Korea, LG Chem has supplied California toy company Mattel with acrylonitrile butadiene styrene based on vegetable feedstocks.

LG Chem can produce about 2 million tons of transparent ABS annually, according to Aju Business Daily. The thermoplastic biopolymer is certified by ISCC PLUS, a program verifying biobased and circular raw materials.

LG Chem says the biobased ABS results in far less carbon emissions compared to fossil-based ABS. “We will lead the market with sustainable materials centered on eco-friendly products and provide valuable consumption opportunities for customers,” LG Chem’s petrochemical division head No Guk-rae tells Aju. The renewable feedstocks were supplied by Neste.

Mattel has set a goal of achieving 100% recycled, recyclable, or biobased plastic for all its plastics and packaging needs by 2030. Earlier this year, SABIC announced it had supplied Mattel with biobased polypropylene.
