Portland to phase out 99% of fossil fuels for medium and heavy trucks by 2030

December 8, 2022 |

In Oregon, The Oregonian newspaper reports that Portland’s city council has agreed to phase out fossil-based diesel for medium and heavy trucks beginning in 2024 and eventually reaching only 99% renewable diesel available at the pump by 2030, making it the first city in the country to phase out fossil fuels and replace them biofuels. The unanimous decision is part of the city’s emergency plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030. The original proposal was for the phase out to be complete by 2026 but the trucking industry was concerned about a lack of available supply, so the transition was pushed back to 2030.
