Germany’s rapeseed industry seen hit hard if crop-based biofuels phased out

January 26, 2023 |

In Germany, Reuters reports Oil World analysts say that if the country continues with proposals to eliminate crop-based biofuel production by 2030 that rapeseed production would suffer significantly, and trade flows would shift. As a result, domestic animal feed supplies would shrink, increasing demand for imported soy-based replacements while rapeseed oil would be destined primarily for export markets. About half of the country’s rapeseed production is used as biofuel feedstock. Although Germany’s environment minister wants to replace crop-based biofuels with waste feedstocks, Oil World says there aren’t enough waste streams to shift to entirely.
