Japan works with Singapore, the US to jointly procure SAF

February 2, 2023 |

In Japan, Asahi Shimbun reported that the Government of Japan is in negotiations with Singapore and the United States to outline a framework for jointly procuring sustainable aviation fuel. The Japanese government aims to ink this agreement within the next two to three years as the global race for the biofuel is accelerating, according to the report. “SAF is easy to use and there is a growing sense of urgency to strengthen the supply chain in terms of enhancing Japan’s economic security,” said Ryuichi Kurokawa, a senior researcher with the Japan Transport and Tourism Research Institute. Japan is also considering to create a consortium of airlines and SAF producers for these countries and providing funds to it. The transport ministry concluded a memorandum with Singapore’s aviation authorities in December 2022 to launch a study aimed at promoting the use of SAF on flights between Japan and Singapore.
