Japanese-led consortium to study pongamia production in Australia for SAF supply chain

March 9, 2023 |

In Australia, Burnett Mary Regional Group (BMRG), Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. and J-Oil Mills, Inc., with the cooperation of the Queensland government, have agreed to jointly study the establishment of a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply chain by planting Pongamia pinnata (Millettia pinnata) trees, a non-edible oil feedstock, in Queensland for the purpose of CO2 fixation and
securing plant materials through reforestation.

The project will study the planting and management of Pongamia pinnata trees, CO2 fixation and offsetting through the planting, building an SAF supply chain (harvesting, separation of oil, transportation, and SAF production), and forest investment, aiming to start small-scale cultivation verification in Queensland by the end of 2023.
