Anglian Water Services seeking partner to upgrade biogas to biomethane

March 29, 2023 |

In the UK, Anglian Water Services Ltd (AWS) produces over 150,000 dry metric tonnes of raw wastewater derived sludge per annum that is treated at 10 regional sludge treatment centres. AWS treats the sludge using advanced anaerobic digestion technologies and biogas is produced which they currently use as a renewable fuel in combined heat & power (CHP) engines. To support the company’s net zero 2030 plans, it has launched a Prior Information Notice announcing its intention to transition its CHP fleet over to biogas upgrading to biomethane for grid injection or other beneficial use.

Its base plan is to switch their sites at Cottonvalley (Milton Keynes), Gt Billing (Northampton) & Whitlingham (Norwich) to biomethane and would consider the option to accelerate our transition across our other STC sites. As such, they are seeking end to end service for the upgrading of raw biogas to biomethane. This shall include full engineering, procurement and construction of, but not be limited to:

·      Gas clean-up Biomethane upgrading equipment

·      Grid injection or compression equipment where option is transfer to a remote receiving station or alternate use (e.g use as a Bio-CNG fuel)

·      Pipeline & connection to grid (possible CO2 capture and recovery) (possible wider renewable energy integration, e.g. heat pumps for process heating, solar etc to maximise renewable energy benefits from our STC operations)

At this stage they remain open to the commercial models from traditions design, build (AWS operate) through to design, build, operate and design, build, finance, operate models.
