Danimer Scientific and TotalEnergies Corbion create PLA-PHA blend for compostable coffee pods

April 17, 2023 |

In Georgia, bioplastic makers Danimer Scientific and TotalEnergies Corbion say they have developed a compostable material for single-use coffee pods that complies with proposed EU packaging regulations for the ubiquitous—but unfortunately problematic—product category.

Danimer and TotalEnergies Corbion’s new formulation contains a blend of Danimer’s polyhydroxyalkanoate Nodax® and TotalEnergies Corbion’s Luminy® High Heat polylactic acid materials.  It has already passed biodegradability tests and been certified by TUV as home compostable.

Danimer estimates that, in Europe alone, 550 million pounds of plastic are used annually for single-use coffee pods.

The EU recently proposed a regulation that would require plastic packaging such as tea bags, coffee pods, very light plastic bags and sticky labels for fruit and vegetables to be compostable.
