In India, the Hindu Business Line newspaper reports the government is aiming to support increased corn production as ethanol feedstock similarly to how it has supported sugarcane production to ensure reaching its 20% ethanol blending target by 2025. Corn production would have to reach 42.5 million metric tons if it is going to contribute significantly to the 20% mandate, up from the current 34 million tons, but critics said that such a push for corn production would not be sustainable.
