Hainan at the heart of potential fraudulent biodiesel exports to Europe

In China, Bloomberg reports the tropical island of Hainan has become the center of the controversy surrounding a significant increase in used cooking oil-based biodiesel exports to Europe from China, with UCO originating on the island despite not having biodiesel processing facilities. Nearly half a million metric tons of UCO biodiesel has been exported to Europe from Hainan during 2022, about 28% of China’s total biodiesel experts. Some are concerned that fraudulent exports could lead to trade sanction on Chinese biodiesel.
