In Belize, Reuters reports the country will together with German company Variodin will invest $50 million to produce biofuels from sargassum seaweed that is clogging up Caribbean beaches together with municipal solid waste. With more financing, the project could be scaled up further to export electricity to the national grid through a Power Purchase Agreement. Although the facility isn’t expected to solve the sargassum problem, it is expected to help manage it, a problem with costs the Caribbean region $120 million per year to clean up.
