In South Carolina, Sage Automotive Interiors and biomaterials startup NFW have partnered to develop plant-based leather alternative for car interiors. The pact between Sage Automotive Interiors, a subsidiary of Asahi Kasei Group, and NFW “enables another major step to support global automotive OEMs in reducing the environmental burden of the automobile lifecycle,” according to a press statement.

NFW will contribute its plant-based leather, foam, and textiles materials for replacing animal and petrochemical-based materials. These materials include NFW’s MIRUM® leather alternative, which is made from natural rubber, natural fibers, plant oils, natural pigments, and minerals.

Sage Automotive Interiors will contribute its expertise in the development, manufacturing, and sales of innovative functional materials used in automobile interiors globally. Its products include automotive interior materials for seating, door panel surfaces and headliners.
