PANGAIA to buy PEF from Avantium for apparel

December 4, 2023 |

In the Netherlands, PANGAIA, a global collective dedicated to sustainable fashion, has entered into an agreement to procure plant-based polyethylene furanoate (PEF) from Avantium’s inaugural production facility.  The collaboration signifies a significant step toward advancing environmentally friendly practices in the apparel industry.

PEF, a plant-based polymer derived from furandicarboxylic acid, boasts versatile applications, including but not limited to bottles, packaging, films, and textiles. Avantium is set to begin production of FDCA at Delfzijl, the Netherlands in the second half of 2024.

In a recent press statement, Avantium said it was intensifying focus on the development of PEF for fibers and yarns. This strategic shift positions PEF-based fibers as a compelling alternative to traditional PET fiber, which constituted just over half of the global fiber production in 2021. The move aligns with the growing consumer demand for sustainable apparel.
