Czech rail company testing HVO in 2024 and 2025

December 21, 2023 |

In the Czech Republic, České dráhy will start testing diesel fuel with increased content of sustainable biofuel based on hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) in new 847 class diesel units supplied by Pesa Bydgoszcz. The partner of this project in the field of fuel research and supplies is ORLEN Unipetrol.

The aim of the joint research project, scheduled for 2024 and 2025, is to verify the possibility of using this biodiesel in passenger diesel engines and then implement it in normal operation. In addition to the above-mentioned companies, the CTU Center for Sustainable Mobility Vehicles, the Railway Institute, PESA and the ORLEN Unipetrol Research and Education Center are also involved in the project.

As part of the implementation of the strategy of reducing carbon dioxide emissions and using renewable resources as part of the legislative activities of the European Union and the Czech Republic, the national carrier České dráhy and ORLEN Unipetrol will launch a project in the new year focused on joint testing of fuel with sustainable biocomponents in diesel passenger units. Fuel containing hydrogenated vegetable oil, the so-called HVO will be delivered by ORLEN Unipetrol, which will prepare individual mixtures at its production plant in Pardubice.
