January 9, 2024 |

In Japan, the Nikkei newspaper reports that Sumitomo plans to up its bet on renewables by going into biodiesel production with a focus on wood waste and sugarcane residues. Together with the University of Tokyo and Solariant Capital, it is investing in a demonstration facility on the southern island of Tanegashima that is expected to be online by 2025. Should it be successfully, the company is eyeing commercial production by 2027 with a target of eventually producing 1 million metric tons annually.
