Rengo to invest $113M in construction waste-to-ethanol for SAF feedstock

February 19, 2024 |

In Japan, the Nikkei newspaper reports Rengo plans to invest $133 million in ethanol production from construction waste as feedstock by 2027 to create a feedstock supply for sustainable aviation fuel. Japan aims for 10% SAF consumption by 2030. The idea is to produce the ethanol 20 million liters of ethanol per year via Rengo and its paper production and industrial waste processing arm, Taiko Paper. There are concerns that Japan doesn’t produce enough crops or used cooking oil to provide sufficient feedstock for SAF so construction waste could be a viable alternative.
