bp to gradually restructure Gelsenkirchen site towards SAF

March 7, 2024 |

In Germany, by the end of the decade, bp is planning to gradually restructure the Gelsenkirchen site in such a way that it can follow the path of the energy transition and use its potential. bp plans, subject to appropriate permits, to enable the production of lower-emission fuels using co-processing in the hydrocracker plant at the Gelsenkirchen-Scholven site to produce more sustainable aviation fuels (so-called Sustainable Aviation Fuels – SAF), among other things.

In order to set up the refine in the future, it is necessary to massively reduce the complexity of the site and shut down plant components for which capacity is expected to decline in the future – whereby petrochemical production remains the core division.

For this reason, five plants in the Horst and Scholven plants are to be taken out of service as planned in a first step from 2025. This could lead to a planned and controlled reduction in total production capacity – currently around 12 million metric tons of crude oil per year – to around eight million tons at the site.
