March 11, 2024 |

In Poland, Bio PlastPom and Gdańsk University of Technology have developed a biodegradable and compostable packaging material made from potato starch.

Tradenamed NOPLA, the material is free of artificial ingredients or plastics and breaks down without adding microplastics into the environment. It is expected to comply with EN 13432 composting standards and EU Directive 904/2019 SUP. The material’s carbon footprint of 1.7 kg of carbon dioxide per kilogram is also half that of polypropylene.

According to PotatoPro.com, NOPLA can be used cutlery, straws, and other applications requiring food contact.  The pro-potato publication also noted that Bio Plast Pom already has a production line online, but did not specify its location.
