Cargill plans oilseed crushing plant in Australia

In Australia, Financial Review reported that Cargill and CBH Group, Australia’s largest cooperative, are working together on plans for a large-scale oilseed crushing plant south of Perth.

The report noted that Cargill is in talks with the West Australian government about securing a site adjacent to CBH’s Kwinana grain terminal which sits on a rail line able to supply canola grown on farms in the state’s vast wheat belt region.

The Cargill-CBH combination could supply a biofuel production hub earmarked for BP’s former oil import terminal at Kwinana, the report added.

“We see a range of benefits including adding processing capacity to Australia and the ability to process West Australia canola to oil and meal which will service the domestic and export oil and meal markets, besides supplying to the emerging biofuel market both in Australia and internationally,” Cargill Australia managing director Zsolt Kocza said.

“Cargill has been in discussions with several parties regarding this potential crush plant facility in Kwinana, including CBH and how their existing supply chain may be able to support accumulation and export connections for the plant,” he added.
