Tokyo metropolitan government carries out study to assess waste-to-SAF potential

April 10, 2024 |

In the UK, SAF Investor reported that the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said that it is conducting a feasibility study to ascertain the potential of turning municipal waste into sustainable aviation fuel. “In principal, the target is general waste in Tokyo; however, if it’s not possible to secure the properties and amount of general waste necessary for SAF production, business profitability etc., after consultation with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government in advance, industrial waste from inside and outside Tokyo will be considered,” the city’s government said in a statement. The report noted that projects producing SAF that meet the ASTM D7566 technical certification can qualify for government subsidies. Moreover, the plant must have the capacity to process more than 50 metric tons per day. However, companies can also set up pilot or demonstration plants with much lower capacity, the report added.
