In Canada, Alberta could produce half of its fuel needs from biomass resources, thanks to existing cereal and oilseed production as well as some forestry residue, poplar trees, and energy crops. Key will be drop-in fuels rather than biodiesel because of the need for fuels that can handle extreme cold. Using 5% of Canada’s arable land could produce 29 billion liters of biofuel.
