India decision on ethanol floats towards Prime Minister's desk

In India, the competition between chemical, spirits and fuel industries for the country’s limited ethanol supply continues with each believing it has the rights to it and may soon come to a head with a decision by the Prime Minister. A committee late last year said the potable sector should get first rights, followed by the industrial sector—who is promoting their use of ethanol as ‘green chemistry’—with whatever’s left for fuel blending considering the lower energy content of ethanol. Despite the PM wanting to remain neutral, he may soon be forced to make a decision.
