#4 Total-Corbion eyes Indian market, inks collaboration with Mangalore’s Konspec

In India, bioplastic maker Total-Corbion is planning a technical collaboration with Mangalore polymer producer Konspec. Under the terms of the deal, Konspec will convert Total-Corbion’s PLA to the specifications of local users.

“India has a huge potential to utilize a large share of the 75,000 tonne PLA [polylactic acid] produced at Total-Corbion’s Thailand plant in Rayong,” Konspec CEO Vinod Bondal tells Deccan Herald. “We are confident of beginning 5-6 ‘light house’ projects immediately in over the next months itself.” He adds that India could absorb 2 million metric tons of biodegradable plastic annually.

The announcement comes shortly after the country’s prime minister, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, called for a ban on single-use plastic.
