PBF Energy looking to add renewable diesel production to Chalmette refinery

February 11, 2021 |

In Louisiana, Platts reports PBF Energy is looking to transition its Chalmette oil refinery to produce renewable diesel, in line with industry trends that have seen several major oil refiners make the switch. The high cost of complying with the Renewable Fuel Standard is seen as the driver for the potential investment, producing as much as 20,000 barrels per day thanks to an idled hydrocracker that would provide the required hydrogen. Credit Suisse analysts are worried that the company’s lack of experience in renewables among other issues might make the project a bad bet.
