Bioplastics brethren: Danimer and Total Corbion sign PLA/PHA blending deal

November 16, 2021 |

In Georgia, two leading bioplastics companies have partnered to support demand for blends of polyhydroxyalkanoate and polylactic acid.

Danimer Scientific, Inc. and Total Corbion PLA have signed a long-term arrangement for Total Corbion PLA to supply its Luminy® PLA to Danimer as Danimer works to scale up the commercial production of its Nodax® PHA.

Danimer says growing production of PHA remains its focus, but the supply of PLA will help it meet demand for different functionalities that can be achieved by blending PHA and PLA.

“The biopolymers market is experiencing strong growth, and customers are requesting innovative solutions tailor-made to their market needs,” Thomas Philipon, CEO of Total Corbion PLA, says in a statement. “In today’s dynamic market, strategic arrangements throughout the value chain are key to ensuring security of supply in both product and technology that will allow brand owners and ultimately consumers to be comfortable with selecting bioplastics as a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.”

Total Corbion PLA is a 50/50 PLA joint venture between TotalEnergies and Corbion.
