Brazilian ethanol sales fall 32% in January due to high prices

February 16, 2022 |

In Brazil, Reuters reports UNICA data shows ethanol sales fell 32% in January to 1.76 billion liters, the lowest since April 2021 during lockdown, due to high ethanol prices. Hydrous ethanol prices fell 44% to 918 million liters as cheap gasoline prices—despite higher global petroleum prices—weighs on demand for ethanol in flex-fuel cars. High sugar prices have kept mills focused on producing the sweetener rather than ethanol, keeping ethanol prices high even before the intercrop season began.
