Umara says biofuels too difficult to attract investment so uses seaweed for fake bacon

April 27, 2022 |

In California, TechCrunch reports that Umara is focusing on seaweed as a feedstock for fake bacon because they saw biofuel production as not becoming commercial soon enough to attract investment. Seaweed not only sequesters carbon but also has a high protein content that can be used to tap into the alternative proteins market, making the company an instant winner amongst VCs rather than biofuels that is seen by investors as a “long runway” kind of idea.
