Air New Zealand to start using SAF in certain flights

September 15, 2022 |

In New Zealand, Stuff reported that Air New Zealand expects to start partially using SAF made from recycled cooking oil and animal waste from next week.

Air New Zealand’s CEO Greg Foran said that the first 1.2 million liters of the SAF being imported was the equivalent of about 400 return flights between the local cities of Auckland and Wellington.

The airline said that the SAF was manufactured by Neste and would be imported by fuel company Z energy.

The executive also explained that this initial SAF shipment would help the company to test and set up the supply chain for future deliveries. SAF imports would account for about 1% of the total fuel purchased this year by Air New Zealand, the executive said.

“While we are starting out small, it will help us to test the supply chain and understand the true cost of importing SAF into New Zealand. Currently, SAF only makes up less than 1% of the global fuel supply, and is about three to five times as expensive as fossil jet fuel.”

The executive said that the company expects SAF to fuel 10% of the airline’s overall fleet by 2030.
