Nippon Paper inks MoU targeting a potential production of SAF in Japan

In Japan, Nippon Paper Industries Corp, Sumitomo Corp and Green Earth Institute have reached an agreement to jointly study bioethanol production made from woody biomass. The project, if it succeeds, would aim to produce bioethanol from Nippon Paper’s mills in the fiscal year of 2027 to be used as a feedstock for the production of sustainable aviation fuel in Japan, Nippon Paper said. “The three companies will leverage their mutual strengths to realize Japan’s first entirely domestic cellulosic bioethanol commercial plant utilizing domestic timber with the aim of assisting Japan with integrating low-carbon biofuels into society and ensuring its energy security,” the firm added.
