IATA chief says price of SAF will remain higher than traditional kerosene

October 4, 2023 |

In Mexico, ZFR reported that the head of the International Air Transport Association (IATA), Willie Walsh, has stated that sustainable aviation fuel is likely to continue to be more expensive than traditional kerosene, even as large-scale production increases.

However, Walsh emphasized the industry’s willingness to take on the higher price, stating: “The industry recognizes the problem, is doing everything it can to address it and we will achieve the objectives because… there is no choice here.”

IATA had previously estimated that SAF could account for about 65% of the emissions reductions required for the aviation industry to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. However, Walsh acknowledged that the price of SAF is expected to decline as production volumes will increase, although it will probably remain more expensive than kerosene.
