Somater partners with Eranova to create algae-based polymer packaging

March 24, 2024 |

In France, Premium Beauty News reported that Somater has joined forces with French start-up Eranova to create a 100% bio-based line of packaging solutions. The report noted that this news partnership aims to provide a sustainable alternative to fossil-based polymers

Somater’s new range of biosourced solutions is based on the ALGX material developed by Eranova from green algae collected on the banks of a brackish water lagoon near Marseille, in the south of France. Then, the algae undergo a starch enrichment process in large ponds where they continue to draw CO2 from the atmosphere. The starch is then extracted and transformed into processable bio-based resin, the report added.

To create its primary packs, Somater uses an innovative combination of the ALGX biosourced material with PP/PE, thus resulting in a recyclable solution.

“100% bio-based combinations or those incorporating PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) are also offered. These formulations provide brands with a wide range of options, the positive environmental impact of which is well-documented through standardized Life Cycle Assessments,” said Somater.
