Proposed New York state waste-to-energy/paper project hits opposition

In New York state, the Times Union newspaper reports that environmental groups are calling for an extended public comment period regarding the proposed waste-to-energy or waste-to-paper project being developed by Hughes Energy. Opponents to the project are concerned it will ruin the pristine nature of the Catskill Mountains as well as water quality for New York City residents whose water is sourced from reservoirs in the area. The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation decided last month a full environmental impact assessment for the project was required due to its having enough potential risks to merit one.
