HC&S still looking for right energy crop for Maui

In Hawaii, Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar hasn’t yet found the bioenergy sweet spot, looking for energy crops that grow as well as sugarcane or better so the company can diversify its sugar production or move away from sugar and into energy completely. The company has received grants to trial various sugarcane, sorghum and bana grass varieties but nothing yet works in the variety of soils the 56 square miles of plantation have or can stand up to Maui’s strong winds.
